Thank you for being interested in autocross! Autocross is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to get into motorsports. Have questions? We have answers. 

What is autocross?

Autocross is a timed driving skills event where you drive one car at a time through a cone course on a paved surface. It involves tight corners, quick reflexes, and no wheel-to-wheel danger. 

Is it beginner-friendly?

Very. We have novice classes and instructors often available. No one expects you to be fast, only safe. Everyone has gotten lost on course, hit cones, or spun out before. Don’t worry about mistakes while you’re learning. 

Do I need a racecar?

Nope. Your daily driver is probably fine. Completely stock cars are very common. You don’t need a roll cage or any mods, just a car that is mechanically sound and passes the technical inspection. 

Will this be hard on my car?

 Not really! Tires and brakes will take the most wear. Cone marks buff out, but if you want to protect your paint, painter’s tape on your fenders can help. Failures are rare, but poorly installed or defective aftermarket parts (especially suspension) are the most common issue. 

What does it cost?

Costs vary by region, but for the NRSCCA, event entry is $45-$70 depending on event type and if you have the added $20 cost of a weekend membership. (If you are new to autocross, your first NRSCCA event entry is free!) Long term, you’ll need to buy tires more often. 

What happens at an event? 

• Show up at gate open (check the event page for the schedule)

• Sign waiver at the gate & register at the trailer

• Tech inspection for car & helmet

• Walk the course! We always have a novice walk so an experienced driver can talk you through the specific course.

• Mandatory driver’s meeting

• During one of the event “heats”, you will work your work assignment (usually resetting cones as a course worker)

• During the heat you run in, you’ll be able to take part in the novice parade lap and then take your first runs!

What do I need to bring?

You’ll need your car (empty out loose items), your driver’s license, water and snacks, sunscreen and a helmet (or borrow one). That’s it!

What if I don’t have a helmet?

That’s fine! Loaners are available, and you can pick what size you need during registration.

Where do I go to do this?

The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) hosts autocross competitions across the nation, but you can also check out regional car clubs or Facebook groups to find local autocrosses near you. Our region, the Nebraska Region SCCA, hosts our events at the Lincoln Airport.

What’s the first step I should take?

1. Find a local Solo event: https://nrscca.motorsportreg.com/

2. Register online for one of the Sunday events. The Novice class is great for first timers!

3. Just show up and tell us you’re new.
