Worker Assignments (Autocross)
Normal Work Assignments
These work assignments are assigned randomly by the Chief of Workers, and the number of each one varies based on the number of heats and the participant count of the event.
Announcer
The person working this assignment sits in the timing trailer and uses the club PA (public address) system to talk about the competition going on in that heat, and if any sort of announcement needs to be made to the paddock / grid area as a whole.
This is an optional position, and may not be assigned for heats / events with a smaller number of workers.
Number of positions:
- One per heat.
Responsibilities:
- Use the PA system to give running commentary on the heat. This can include the following, but announcers all have their own style:
- Talk about who in the class that is currently on track is leading the class, position changes based on new times put down in class standings, etc.
- Additional info about the cars and drivers involved in the heat that may be interesting.
- Informing the grid / paddock regarding delays, etc.
- Use the PA system to make any announcements needed, either by Control or by someone who is relaying the announcement request through the Control position.
Requirements:
- Comfort in talking to people using a microphone.
- The ability to use the Pronto "TSAnnounce" module running on one of the timing laptops, which shows the Announcer useful information about the cars / classes currently on the course.
Course Chalking
The person working this assignment does their work prior to the start of the first heat, and is responsible for putting the "chalk" outlines around all of the cones on the course. This is important, as this is how corner workers know precisely where cones need to be reset to after behind hit or otherwise moved.
Number of positions:
- One per event day.
Responsibilities:
- Use chunks of drywall to mark the boxes around all upright cones on the course, and "V's" around each pointer cone on the course. This includes all of the cones before the starting light beam, and all cones in the runoff after the finish line.
- If time allows, use the "flour dispenser" to create "chalk" lines on either side of the course.
Requirements:
- The ability to bend over many times to mark all of the cones.
- The ability to walk and pull the dispenser behind them to make the chalk lines.
Course
There are two different "Course" work assignment types; "Corner Captain" and "Corner Worker".
Course - Corner Captain
(To be completed.)
Course - Corner Worker
The people working this assignment stand out on course during the heats within the "zone" that their corner number is responsible for. Their job is to be first and foremost always mindful of the cars around them, but also to keep an eye on the cones that the cars may hit. If one does get hit, it is the closest corner worker's responsibility to run as quickly as possible to reset the cone back to its original position. The corner worker must communicate with the corner captain to make sure that penalties (cones, DNFs, etc.) get called in, or if a nudged cone is actually safe.
Number of positions:
- Average of 2-4 per corner, per heat.
- Minimum of one per corner, per heat.
