The Bly-Gross Memorial was established to recognize the best road rally of the year.
The winner was determined by the contestant evaluations of T.S.D. (time, speed, distance) road rallys.
Drivers and navigators independently rate the year's events with the member's scores averaged to determine the winner of the Bly-Gross Trophy. In order to qualify for a best event trophy, over 50% of the competitors (members and non-members) must have rated the event.
Because TSD road rallys are no longer being held in Nebraska Region, this trophy and the two other road rally trophies have been retired.
This trophy was established in 1996 following John Bly's death and was donated to the Region by Dick Gross. John and Dick were avid road rally participants.
An attempt was made to bring back the road rally program in 2013 and 2014. Although in each of those years only one event was held, it was the opinion of the Board of Governors that this trophy should be awarded.
A road rally is a competition held on public roads in which both driving and navigational skills are tested. A crew consists of both a driver and a navigator. The object is to follow a set of written instructions, maintaining designated average speeds and arriving on time at checkpoints.
Being early -OR- late at a checkpoint is penalized. The sum of the penalties at each checkpoint is the final score for the rally, and the crew with the lowest score is the winner. A perfect score for a TSD (time, speed, distance) road rally = zero.
