The National Competition Driver of the Year was awarded annually to the outstanding nationally licensed competition driver.
Like many of the other annual trophies, the National Competition Driver has had several methods for determining the winner over the years.
Most recently, this trophy, and the George Gunther Memorial, were awarded based on the votes of a selection committee.
The selection committee consisted of the last three winners* of the national trophy, the last three winners* of the Gunther Memorial Trophy, and a race worker appointed by the Regional Executive.
*The last three individuals who won the award.
Originally referred to as the "Tony Andersen Trophy" this award was first given to Gene Smiley, who drove an Osca.
As of 2015, this trophy has become the Nebraska Majors Driver of the Year due to changes made to club racing at a national level.
